Directions from North to South
These driving instructions will lead the traveler turn by turn down Boone Trace in a north-to-south direction beginning at Fort Boonesborough and ending at Martin Station in Virginia.
1. Begin at the original Fort Boonesboro site with Sycamore Hollow adjacent. This site can be located by taking the park entrance next to the swimming pool and following the road 0.2 miles to the back of the park.
NOTE: The fort replica can be visited by traveling 0.4 miles on Hwy 627 from its intersection with Hwy 388
2. Exit the park turning left onto Hwy 388- 10.2 miles
- Pioneer gravestones can be seen on the left at this intersection
- Lisle cemetery at 0.3 miles on the right
- Hart house foundation at 0.3 miles on the left
- Lisle house at 0.7 miles back in trees on right
- Otter Creek will be on left crossing road twice
- Pioneer cemetery just before railroad crossing sign at 2.4 miles about 200 feet from road on left under large tree
- The Redhouse at 5.3 miles on left
- Otter Creek and railroad cross right to left at 6.3 miles and The Trace leavesroadway to the left
- Boone Trace can be visualized down in valley 1/2 mile off road to left of crest of hill at 7.0 miles
3. Right on Ky 1986- 0.3 miles
4. Left at stop light (Hwy 25/421/Robert Martin Bypass/no road sign)- 3.1 miles
5. Left on Hwy 25/421- 2.3 miles
- Group markers on left at 1.4 miles
6. Right at stop light (Duncannon Rd/no road sign/Marathon Gas Station on SW corner)- 0.8 miles
7. Right on Golden Leaf Blvd (tiny sign or no sign/can identify entrance by brick facade at four-way stop on left)- 0.4 miles
8. Park at intersection with Cady Dr coming from east
- Walk on gravel road west opposite intersection 100 yards to marker in clump of trees
9. U-turn back to Duncannon Rd through four-way stop- 0.4 miles
10. Left at second stop sign (Duncannon Rd/no road sign/four lane highway)- 0.8 miles
11. Right at stop light (Hwy 25/421/no stop sign/Marathon gas station on right)- 1.0 miles
12. Left on Hwy 421 (caution/dangerous turn)- 4.9 miles
- Pass battlefield on right and view of Joe Lick Knob to the south
- After passing Kingston, Hays Fork Creek will be on right
13. Right on Hwy 1016- 0.3 miles
14. Left on Blue Lick Rd (Hwy 1617)- 3.7 miles
- Tricky turn at 2.0 miles at intersection with Johnson Rd where Blue Lick Rd makes sharp left turn. Tiny road sign hidden in trees on left
15. Bear slightly left at stop sign (Shortline Drive) 0.1 mile
16. Cross Hwy 21 at stop sign and continue straight (still on Hwy 1617)- 1.7 miles
17. Right on Hwy 595 (Scaffold Cane Rd)- 3.9 miles
- Cross Brushy Fork Creek bridge at 3.6 miles
18. Left on Prospect Street- 100 feet
- Boone Tavern marker will be on right in grassy square in front of restaurant
19. Left on Chestnut Street- 0.4 miles
20. Left on Boone Street- 1.6 miles
- Becomes Slate Lick Rd at 0.3 miles where bridge crosses Brushy Fork Creek and creek remains on the right
- Pass through tunnel
21. Left at stop sign (US 25/no road sign but yellow building on left)- 2.1 miles
- Pass through Boone Gap at 1.4 miles at the Rockcastle County line
22. Left on McCollum Rd- 1.1 miles
-TRICKY TURN at 0.2 miles. Bear right as emerge on other side of railroad tunnel
- Roundstone Creek will be on right
23. Bear right at Little Clear Creek Rd stop sign- 0.1 mile
- VERY TRICKY TURN. Keep Fairview Baptist Church on left
24. Left on Old State Rd- 4.6 miles
- TRICKY TURN at 1.9 miles (Sinking Valley Spgs Rd from left). Bear right at intersection
25. Right at stop sign (Scaffold Cane Rd/Hwy1617/no road sign/Roundstone Baptist Church on right)- 0.2 miles
26. Right just past railroad track- 50 feet
- Do not go to Wildie
LEAVE BOONE TRACE AT THIS POINT
27. Left on US 25- 5.4 miles
- Restaurants and fuel available at Renfro Valley and Mt Vernon (Next available in London, Ky)
28. Turn left at stop light and remain on US 25- 1.0 mile
- McDonalds restaurant on SE corner
29. Left at stop light and remain on US 25 (Wilderness Rd/Hwy 150)- 8.9 miles
30. Left on Hwy 490 after entering Livingston- 5.5 miles to Trace Branch Rd
- Cross bridge and remain on Hwy 490
- Rockcastle River will be on right
31. Continue on Hwy 490 after passing Trace Branch Rd road sign on right- 8.2 miles
REJOIN BOONE TRACE at Trace Branch Rd
Cross Rockcastle River at 1.5 miles and intersect with the Sheltowee Trail here
Winding Blade Rd marker on right at 5.0 miles on Hwy 490
Mt Carmel Church DAR marker on left at 7.7 miles on Hwy 490
32. Left on Murray Cemetery Rd (small sign just past Landrum Cemetery on right)- 0.8 miles
- Look for Wood’s Blockhouse marker at 0.2 miles across Hazel Patch Creek on right (looking southwest)
33. Left on Hwy 1394- 1.8 miles
34. Left on Hwy 30- 2.0 miles
35. Right on Feltner-Steer Rd (Old Hog Rd)- 1.6 miles
- Stone marker at SE corner
36. Left at stop sign (Twin Branch Rd/no road sign)- 0.3 miles
37. Right at stop sign (Hwy 638/McWhorter Rd/no road sign)- 6.4 miles
- Caution- sharp left turn at intersection with Slate Lick Church Rd
- Macedonia Church on left at 4.5 miles
38. Left at Sam Black Rd- 0.9 miles
- Stone marker at NE corner
39. Right at stop sign (Hwy 472/Johnson Rd/no road sign)- 0.6 miles
40. Left on Hal Rogers Parkway- 0.8 miles

46. Right on Hwy 229 (Barbourville Rd/no road sign)- 2.7 miles
- Cross Laurel River
47. Right on Old State Rd just past bridge (tiny sign)- 2.4 miles
- Continue through stop sign and road becomes Hopkins Cemetery Rd
48. Right on Walnut Rd (small sign) past Hopkins Cemetery - 0.3 miles
49. Left on Cherry Hill Rd- 0.8 miles
- Raccoon Springs on right at 0.3 miles
50. Left at stop sign (Echo Valley Rd/no road sign)- 0.5 miles
51. Right at stop sign (Hopkins Cemetery Rd/no road sign)- 1.6 miles
- Continue through stop sign at McClure Bridge Rd bearing slightly to left
- Pass Wally’s Pay Lake on right
- Hopkins Cemetery Rd becomes Hwy 830 at 1.2 miles- continue straight on Hwy 830
52. Right on Hwy 233- 3.4 miles to US 25E
53. Cross US 25E (caution- dangerous crossing) and continue on Hwy 233- 2.0 miles
- Cross railroad track

64. Just after sharp bend to right, left at stop sign (US 25E/no road sign/four-lane highway/wrecking company on left at intersection)- 2.4 miles
- Cross Turkey and then Stinking Creek
65. Left on Hwy 3085 (Flat Lick)- 0.1 miles
66. Immediate left on Evergreen- 2.2 miles
- At fork, bear left and do not turn on to Sky View Rd
- Daniel Boone Park on right at 0.5 miles
- Bear left at intersection (telephone pole on right)
- Pass through tunnel near end of segment
67. Left at stop sign (US25E/no road sign/four lane highway/)- 0.2 miles
68. Almost immediate left on to Elys Hollow Rd (tiny sign)- 13.7 miles to Wallsend
- Cross railroad tracks twice
- Cumberland River will be on right
- Caution- Abrupt right bend
- Approaches close to US 25E midway- continue straight and bear left
- Passes through narrow zig-zag between two concrete pillars at 5.5 miles
- Continue straight at stop sign where road becomes Hwy 2014
- Continue straight again and 2014 becomes 2015
69. Turn sharp right at yellow arrow sign pointing right (W. Kentucky Ave/no street sign)- 0.1 miles
70. Turn sharp left (yellow arrow sign on right)- 0.4 miles
- Cross Cumberland River
- Passes through flood wall
71. Left at stop light (US 25E/no road sign/four lane highway/)- 8.1 miles
- Cumberland Ford on left at Hwy 66
- Narrows Overlook on left just past Hwy 119
72. Turn right on Hwy 3486- 4.4 miles
- Yellow Creek will be on left
- Cross railroad track
- Continue through stop sign and road becomes Hwy 441
- Continue through four-way stop at BP station and road becomes 19th Street with cemetery on right
73. Right at stop (19th Street/no street sign/cemetery on right/Oldest House in Middlesboro (straight ahead on left)- 0.5 miles
74. Left at Ashbury (no street sign/Alexanders Garage on SE corner)- 0.4 miles
75. Right at stop sign (15th Street/just past Lincoln HS park on left)- 0.3 miles
76. Left on Cumberland Ave- 0.3 miles
77. Right on US 25E- 2.6 miles
- Cumberland Gap Visitor Center on right
- Pass through tunnel
78. Right on Hwy 58 East- 0.5 miles
- Best view of the Gap at 0.2 miles on left
79. Left to “Historic Area Cumberland Gap, Tn”- 0.3 miles
- Can hike the actual dirt trail of Boone Trace at this site
80. U-turn back to Hwy 58 East- 0.3 miles
81. Left on Hwy 58 East- 7.7 miles
82. Left at Wilderness Road State Park (Martin Station)- 0.3 miles to fort on left
